Golden Hits Radio's Everything Oldies......where Oldies news comes first!

Up On The Roof

Today in 1969, The Beatles performed in public for the final time on the roof of Apple Studios on Savile Row in London.  The idea for the "impromptu" performance had actually come several days earlier, but the roof had to be shored up to carry the weight of the band's equipment.  The show became the backbone for the 1970 documentary film Let It Be, a movie which has yet to see a DVD or Blu-ray release due to surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr due to scenes depicting the infighting which ultimately led to the group's demise.

After 42 minutes, London police ordered the Fab Four to end the performance, but fortunately cameras were rolling to document most of the show, which was originally meant to be a TV documentary.  Attempts at posting the entire movie on YouTube have been met with removal due to copyright issues by The Beatles' record label, EMI.  Some clips have remained however, and here is a snippet.............

Golden Hits Radio's Everything Oldies......where Oldies news matters!

Etta James (1938-2012)

Golden Hits Radio would like to pay tribute to one of music's all-time greats, Etta James, upon her passing Friday (Jan. 20, 2012) just five days shy of what would have been her 75th birthday.  While she never achieved the pop chart success of her 50's and 60's era peers (her biggest chart hit, 1967's "Tell Mama", peaked at #23), her career would endure long past that of many of the era's biggest hitmakers.  Her distinguished resume includes six Grammy Awards (including a 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award), induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, two songs in the Grammy Hall of Fame, including her signature song, "At Last".

Here is a clip of her final TV appearance on a 2009 episode of Dancing With The Stars.......

In 1986, she appeared in the Chuck Berry documentary Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll! alongside her former Chess Records labelmate.......

Her life and career were documented in the 2008 feature film Cadillac Records, with Beyonce Knowles portraying her onscreen.  Click here to rent from Netflix or to rent or buy from Amazon.

Here is a clip of Beyonce performing Etta's classic "I'd Rather Go Blind"........

Careful With Those Camera Angles

Ed Sullivan's variety show might have been a ratings monster without the arrival of rock and roll, a genre of music he very publicly disrespected in its infancy.  In the end, however, his embrace of it provided more than a few moments where the entire nation literally stopped what they were doing to watch his show.  Today in 1957 provided one of those moments, and it also provided one of the first examples of censorship in the TV medium.

The first example of trying to "remake" the biggest star in the world at that time came when he was made to appear in a tuxedo with tails on The Steve Allen Show a few months prior to his Sullivan appearance.  Making him feel disrespected, the star vowed never to appear on any show on which Steve Allen was associated with again.  Money talks, however, and in the 1950's, $50,000 for three TV appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show was too lucrative to pass up.  Despite growing concern over his onstage gyrations and movement and contrary to urban legend, the first two of those appearances came and went with no attempt to stifle his onstage energy by Sullivan or his producers.  As the protests became louder and more widespread, however, the third and final appearance would show the superstar in a very different light.

To pacify religious leaders, parents, and other advocacy groups, Sullivan ordered his cameramen to film the star from the waist up.  On that final appearance, Elvis Presley would perform seven songs, and ironically, his ended his final appearance with "Peace In The Valley", a classic gospel song presumably to win over the religious critics who didn't care for the way he danced.  Furthermore, Ed Sullivan went somewhat out of his way to let viewers, including the very same critics denouncing him as a menace to society, know what a pleasure it had been working with Presley.  Following Elvis's final number, he told the nation he was "a real decent, fine boy". What seems G-rated now was considered borderline X-rated on January 6, 1957, but seemingly the controversy temporarily subsided when Ed Sullivan removed Elvis's legs.

From Elvis Presley's third, final, and most notorious Ed Sullivan Show appearance from January 6, 1957.......

Out of the Mouths of Songwriters

For a songwriter, titles and lyrics can come from the strangest of places, and in the case of one of Motown's biggest hits, the corniest of lines in the heat of an argument.

By 1965, Motown Records had become the most bankable hitmaking machine in the music business.  The songwriting team responsibe for many of those hits was the threesome of brothers Brian and Edward Holland (Jr.) and Lamont Dozier.  Among their hits up that point were Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", The Four Tops' "Baby I Need Your Lovin'", and The Miracles' "Mickey's Monkey".

The origin of their smash that made the list of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" goes back to an argument between Lamont Dozier and his girlfriend at the time.  In the heat of the moment, he uttered a line that made them both laugh, and they agreed that something that corny had to become a song title.

The song with that corny title was recorded today in 1965  It would hit #1 in April and become one of Holland/Dozier/Holland's signature songs.  From The Supremes' appearance on "The Hollywood Palace" later that year...............

Revisionist History

Throughout history, sometimes someone is given credit for being the first to do something that he or she might not have done. It has always been an accepted fact that the first time The Beatles appeared on American television was February 9, 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show. While it is true that the Fab Four did indeed appear in studio for the first time on American television that night, their actual first American TV guest shot in prime time came a full 37 days before they took up temporary residence at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.

Another host with a prime time variety show that had a decidedly multicultural show was interested in giving his audience, which skewed decidedly more adult than The Beatles' audience at that time, a taste of what was happening in London at the moment. He sent over a crew to film the group's performance at the Winters Garden in Bournemouth, England and aired a portion of it on his program January 3, 1964.
While Ed Sullivan is given credit for bringing The Beatles to America for the first time, Jack Paar actually gave them their first American network television exposure 48 years ago today. From a 1986 career retrospective special on NBC, here is Jack Paar's recollection of that moment, along with the reminder that it was not Ed Sullivan who first introduced America to The Beatles..........
